North Yorkshire Water Park Expands Lodging with Decommissioned RAF Sea King Helicopters

North Yorkshire Water Park in Wykeham officially expanded its accommodation portfolio on May 1, with the debut of two unique glamping pods fashioned from retired Royal Air Force helicopters.

These eye-catching additions, identified as Westland Sea King models ZE369 and XZ589, previously spent decades performing search and rescue missions throughout the United Kingdom, according to an article by Yorkshire Live.

The conversion process preserved the character of the aircraft while creating a “unique and cosy” environment for families and aviation enthusiasts.

Each unit features a double bed with an illuminated portal window viewing the tail section, alongside bunk beds designed specifically for children.

Guests are granted full access to the original cockpit, which has been repurposed into a dining area where visitors can interact with authentic switches and flight controls.

For convenience, the pods are equipped with self-catering amenities, including a microwave, toaster, kettle, and fridge.

The outdoor experience includes a custom-built gravel landing pad situated outside the winch operator’s sliding door, featuring a picnic bench for guest use.

These aerial-themed stays complement the park’s existing lodging options, which include Lake View Lodge, traditional camping pods, and a standard campsite.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Water Park noted that the new pods offer a “distinctive blend of adventure and comfort” aimed at those seeking alternative short-break experiences. Overnight rates for these specialized accommodations begin at £130.

The introduction of repurposed military hardware underscores the rising demand for experiential lodging that prioritizes storytelling and heritage.

By converting historically significant aircraft into high-quality glamping units, operators can effectively differentiate their property in a competitive market while appealing to niche audiences like families and history buffs.
