New Visitor Centre to Transform Ham Hill Country Park with £3 Million Investment

A major transformation is set for Ham Hill Country Park near Yeovil as construction on a new visitor center is scheduled to begin in March. The project, backed by just over £3 million in funding, will introduce a state-of-the-art gateway feature designed to enhance the park’s appeal for both tourists and local visitors.

According to an article by Somerset Live, South Somerset District Council approved the plans in November 2022, with the National Lottery Heritage Fund contributing £2.15 million after an increase from the original £1.6 million grant.

Since April 2023, Somerset Council has managed the project and has now appointed Sidmouth-based Skinner Construction Ltd. to lead the development.

The 235-square-meter visitor center, located south of the Lime Kiln car park, will showcase permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, education facilities, and a café.

Its curved architectural design, inspired by Iron Age roundhouses, pays homage to the park’s ancient heritage. Construction is expected to run through September, with an option to extend until December if needed.

Chris Hall, executive director for community, place, and economy at Somerset Council, highlighted the park’s historical significance, stating, “Ham Hill Country Park is centered on Hamdon Hill, a large Iron Age hill fort and scheduled monument with continuous occupation since the Iron Age.”

The new center aims to better integrate the park’s historical, geological, and ecological features while minimizing environmental disturbance.

The project’s budget includes £453,000 from Somerset Council, with additional support from the Wolfson Foundation (£74,000), the Clarks Foundation (£11,000), and Leonardo Helicopters (£2,500).

Key expenditures cover construction costs of around £1.26 million, detailed design and project management, car park repairs, traffic calming measures, and the creation of an activity hub.

Further enhancements include £51,000 for footpath improvements, new audio-visual interpretation tools, and over £234,000 allocated for countryside ranger salaries to manage the park’s 173 hectares. Nearly £50,000 will support events and activities to engage the community and visitors.

This development marks a significant investment in outdoor recreation and heritage preservation, reinforcing Ham Hill Country Park’s role as a key destination in Somerset.

It reflects a broader trend in outdoor hospitality, where enhancing visitor experiences through educational, historical, and natural attractions drives sustainable tourism growth.
