Maes Dolau Caravan Park, a family-owned site near Llandudno, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
Located in Llanrhos, the park marked the milestone with a series of events involving its community of holiday home owners, including fundraising activities in support of Manchester’s Christie Hospital, which has been chosen as the park’s 2025 charity of the year.
The park was established in 1950 and has remained family-run throughout its history. Former poultry farmer Rikki Proffitt and his wife Helen took over operations in 1994, transforming the site through significant investment and hands-on management.
Today, their daughter Kelly manages the business, continuing the family’s focus on customer experience and maintaining high standards across the park’s facilities.
Over the decades, Maes Dolau Caravan Park has built a reputation as a well-maintained and welcoming destination for holidaymakers in North Wales.
The site is home to around 100 holiday caravans and offers additional accommodations, including touring pitches, a shepherd’s hut, and a two-bedroom holiday cottage available for rent.
“Our holiday home owners come from both sides of the Welsh border, but all share a similar love for this beautiful part of the world where we are based,” Kelly told the Rhyl, Prestatyn & Abergele Journal.
“The park really is in a privileged location, being just a short distance of one of Wales’s most popular coastal towns with its historic promenade and famous pier.”
Kelly noted that the park’s proximity to attractions such as Colwyn Bay, the Conwy Valley, and Snowdonia makes it a convenient base for visitors.
She added, “Maes Dolau does seem to inspire a lot of loyalty among customers, and one family from St Helens in Merseyside has owned a holiday caravan here for 58 years.”
In September, the park hosted an afternoon tea celebration for all holiday home-owning families to commemorate the 75th anniversary.
Kelly expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Everyone is delighted to be celebrating this milestone anniversary with us, and we’re looking forward to many more decades of showcasing Welsh hospitality at its best.”
For industry professionals, Maes Dolau’s longevity highlights the importance of consistent reinvestment, community engagement, and maintaining a personal connection with guests. Its sustained family ownership and strong customer loyalty illustrate how traditional caravan parks can remain competitive by blending heritage with steady operational improvements.
