Local Artisan-Crafted Cabins Planned for Earsham Mill Glamping Site

A proposal to introduce a new glamping site at the historic Earsham Mill estate near Bungay is under review by South Norfolk Council.

The initiative, led by Iain Gwynn, aims to establish a “restorative countryside retreat” that integrates seamlessly with the existing businesses operating on the site.

Earsham Mill, located along the River Waveney, has been home to nearly 20 businesses since Gwynn and his father, Roger, acquired and renovated the property in 2019.

According to a report published by East Anglian Daily Times, the proposed glamping project would introduce three one-bedroom, rustic cabins designed to provide a tranquil escape for visitors seeking short-term stays.

According to planning documents, the cabins, crafted on-site by a local artisan, are considered “temporary structures due to the ease at which they can be moved.”

Gwynn emphasized that the accommodations are intended for couples or small groups of family and friends, stating that “party groups will not be permitted.”

The vision for the site is to create an experience where guests can “disconnect and enjoy the history that the site and area offer.”

From an industry perspective, the project presents an opportunity to enhance the regional tourism economy while fostering collaboration with surrounding businesses.

The planning documents indicate that partnerships will be established with local enterprises to encourage guests to engage with nearby services.

This approach aligns with a growing trend in the outdoor hospitality sector, where operators seek to create immersive experiences that benefit both visitors and the local economy.

The addition of the glamping site is also expected to generate at least one part-time job. While modest, this employment opportunity contributes to the economic sustainability of the area.

Moreover, the incorporation of eco-conscious accommodations, as stated in the planning papers, underscores a broader industry shift toward environmentally sensitive lodging solutions.

“We believe cabins provide an ecologically viable accommodation solution, suited to the area,” the documents state.

Earsham Mill has a long and storied history, dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Rebuilt in 1863, the mill has undergone multiple transformations, serving as a flour mill under Hovis ownership before transitioning to an animal feed mill until 1981.

Today, the site hosts a variety of businesses, including Grumpy’s Cafe, Earsham Sheds, and Sew And So’s.

If approved, the glamping development could provide an additional accommodation option for visitors while supporting the local business community.

As the outdoor hospitality industry continues to evolve, projects like this highlight the potential for heritage sites to be repurposed in ways that align with modern travel trends.
