Larkhill Tipis and Yurts Marks Over 20 Years as Off-Grid Glamping Destination in Wales

Larkhill Tipis and Yurts in Carmarthenshire, West Wales, has been operating for more than two decades and continues to attract visitors with its off-grid glamping accommodations set within a 20-acre smallholding and woodland.

Established over 30 years ago as an off-grid family home, the site has since developed into a glamping destination that integrates traditional global structures with a focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The site features a range of accommodations inspired by nomadic cultures worldwide, including a Shahsavan Alachigh, a Kazakh and Uzbek Bentwood yurt, a Mongolian ger, a Native American tipi, and a Sami lavvu.

Each dwelling is equipped with wood-burning stoves, outdoor areas, and private spots around the woodland. Guests also have access to a communal log cabin that serves as a hub for self-catering, information, and community interaction.

Since planting four acres of woodland in 1998, the owners have expanded their environmental initiatives to include habitat creation, reed bed systems, and extensive recycling and composting programs.

Renewable energy has powered the site for more than 30 years through a combination of wind, solar, and, more recently, water energy.

A partnership with Swansea University’s RICE team is also underway to develop hydrogen-based energy solutions for future on-site use, including electric vehicle charging and increased renewable capacity.

The location includes facilities such as showers, composting toilets, a play area, and a communal campfire space.

Locally produced honey, eggs, and other goods are available for purchase on-site, alongside information about nearby attractions such as Cardigan Bay and Carmarthen Bay.

For outdoor hospitality operators, Larkhill provides an example of how glamping businesses can integrate cultural storytelling, sustainability, and family-oriented amenities to enhance guest experiences.

Its long-term commitment to renewable energy demonstrates practical applications for reducing operating costs while aligning with traveler demand for environmentally responsible holidays.

The development of hydrogen energy, if successful, could provide a replicable model for other off-grid or semi-rural holiday parks seeking to future-proof their operations against rising energy costs and growing sustainability expectations.
