Eight prefabricated glamping pods could be added to a tourism site near Filey, North Yorkshire, if a planning application submitted to North Yorkshire Council is approved.
The proposal concerns a parcel of enclosed grassland east of the Honeypot Inn in Speeton, where the applicants are seeking permission to install eight pods for holiday accommodation. The neighboring site has operated as a Camping and Caravanning Club-certified van site “for many years,” according to the submitted plans.
The applicants said they have been exploring ways to diversify the existing tourism business and attract additional customers. They said the proposed pods would provide another accommodation option for visitors looking to stay along the North Yorkshire coast.
“This area of North Yorkshire is hugely popular with visitors, and it offers a tranquil spot where visitors can reside whilst being within proximity to the array of tourism offerings,” the planning statement said.
According to the Scarborough News, the application also points to the existing Honeypot Inn as part of the site’s wider tourism offering. “The existing Inn is a local well-known public house and restaurant with a large children’s indoor play area that is currently undergoing refurbishment, offering an excellent venue for families and adults alike.”
The applicants said glamping accommodation is relatively limited in the immediate area, arguing that the proposed pods could serve visitors who are not interested in traditional camping or caravan stays. They described the number of glamping pods in the area as “sparse” and said most existing sites are “taken up by traditional caravan/camp sites which do not appeal to all”.
For outdoor hospitality operators, the proposal illustrates one approach to diversifying an established camping business through fixed accommodation while retaining the site’s existing touring provision.
Adding pods can also broaden the range of accommodation available to customers without necessarily replacing existing pitches, although the commercial viability of such an expansion would depend on factors including planning conditions, infrastructure requirements, operating costs, seasonality and local demand.
Reighton and Speeton Parish Council has raised no objections to the proposal. The applicants have also indicated that they are willing to provide additional landscaping if specific measures are requested by the local planning authority.
