Camp de Reves Glamping in Guernsey has been named a recipient of The King’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category, following a recommendation by the UK Prime Minister and formal approval by His Majesty The King.
This marks the first time a Guernsey-based business has received the prestigious recognition, which celebrates outstanding achievements by UK businesses.
A total of 197 organisations were recognised nationwide this year across four categories. The King’s Awards for Enterprise, originally launched in 1966 as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, were renamed following the accession of King Charles III.
The awards aim to highlight businesses that demonstrate excellence in innovation, international trade, sustainable development, and promoting opportunity through social mobility.
Camp de Reves was co-founded by Jane and Danny Barnes and officially opened in July 2020. The family-run glampsite, located in St Peter’s, sits on land that previously housed Mr. Barnes’ landscaping business.
The site now features three shepherd huts and five safari tents, all overlooking Guernsey’s west coast beaches.
“Sustainability was always our ethos of the whole build,” said Jane Barnes in a report by Guernsey Press. “We’re in such a beautiful location surrounded by wonderful nature and sea views – everything about it needed to stay the same. We needed to blend with the environment.”
Their approach to environmental responsibility includes avoiding pesticides, planting native trees, and maintaining an organic butterfly meadow and food gardens.
These practices were outlined in detail during the application process for the award, which Mrs. Barnes described as “hugely rigorous and lengthy.”
“The process was long but worthwhile,” she said. “It drilled into every part of the business but it was actually a really good process to go through. It made you think from different angles.”
As a result of the award, Camp de Reves has earned the right to use the King’s Awards emblem—a symbol of business excellence—for the next five years.
Additionally, Danny Barnes will attend a royal reception at Windsor Castle in June, and Lt-Governor Lt General Richard Cripwell will formally present the award during a site visit.
“I am delighted to see a Guernsey-based company receive the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise – a first for our island and I hope this marks the start of many more such awards,” said Lt General Cripwell.
“I am also very pleased that Camp des Reves has been recognised for its sustainable development, something that His Majesty was particularly interested in when he visited Guernsey last year.”
The initiative to encourage local businesses to apply for the awards was a joint effort by the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, and Government House. Applications for the 2026 King’s Awards for Enterprise are now open and will close on Tuesday, 9 September.
For outdoor hospitality business owners, the recognition of Camp de Reves highlights the growing significance of sustainability in the sector.
As more guests seek eco-conscious travel experiences, operators may find strategic value in adopting similar sustainable practices—not only to enhance guest appeal but also to pursue recognitions that strengthen brand credibility and public trust.More information on The King’s Awards for Enterprise is available at gov.uk.
