Forestry England has closed Postern Hill Campsite in Savernake Forest, Wiltshire, as it considers the site’s long-term future following financial challenges.
The closure, which took effect on October 6, follows an earlier announcement made during the summer that cited poor financial performance and rising operating costs as key reasons for the decision.
Sherwood Pines Camping Ltd, which previously managed the campsite on the outskirts of Marlborough, has now left the site. In a statement, Forestry England confirmed that Postern Hill will remain closed over the winter while multiple options for its future are reviewed.
A spokesperson said:
“Forestry England Camping at Postern Hill is closed for the winter while Forestry England is considering options for the future of the site. They’re excited to be able to share more information in due course and will continue to manage Savernake Forest in line with the commitments made to the forest and local communities in the ‘Our Shared Forest’ land management plan.”
The spokesperson also conveyed a message from the departing managers:
“Departing managers Rachel and Chris would like to say a huge thank you to the many campers that they’ve had the pleasure of welcoming to the site over these past few years, who have helped make their time at Postern Hill immensely enjoyable, they will miss you all.”
The closure has prompted concern among local residents and councilors, who have expressed fears about the potential loss of a valued community facility and the economic impact on Marlborough.
Local campaigners have described the response from the community as “positive” and are working to ensure the site’s long-term survival, according to the WiltshireTimes.
The Marlborough Town Council has also indicated plans to invite a representative from Forestry England to a future meeting to discuss the decision and potential next steps.
In August, Forestry England explained that the decision was made “amidst uncertain economic conditions.”
The spokesperson added: “Despite great customer reviews, strong, positive customer feedback, together with high numbers of repeat visitors, the financial performance of the site has not met the levels required to sustain ongoing operations.”
”Rising operating costs, uncertain economic conditions, and the limitations of the site’s facilities have all contributed to this outcome.”
”We understand this news will be extremely disappointing to our campers, many of whom have enjoyed this great location regularly over the years. However, this decision is based on the long-term commercial viability of the business.”
For outdoor hospitality operators, Postern Hill’s closure underscores the financial pressures facing smaller and mid-sized campsites amid rising operational costs and shifting economic conditions.
The case highlights the importance of balancing visitor satisfaction with sustainable business models, particularly for sites located in protected or conservation-managed areas where infrastructure investment may be limited.
