Castle Guards Farm Retreat in West Cumbria has emerged as a notable example of farm diversification, offering luxury glamping accommodations while maintaining close family involvement and strong community ties.
The retreat, located on the edge of the Western Lake District, was launched just over four years ago by Emma and Jonny Hind.
Seeking a way to be more present with her children after a career as a pharmaceutical representative, Emma initiated the project with the installation of four glamping pods on their working farm.
“Just over four years ago we diversified part of the farm so that I could be at home for the children,” Emma said to Times & Star. “It was just something that I could do from here on the farm and running a business but still be here for the children as well.”
The pods, one of which is a six-bed unit called Highmoor, are described as high-spec and designed to offer a comfortable, relaxing stay throughout the year.
Amenities such as wood-fired hot tubs, welcome biscuits, personalized gowns, and an honesty shop enhance the guest experience.
The site is tailored to couples and families alike, with larger groups able to book the entire site for private events such as birthdays or hen parties.
Emma emphasized the role of her family in the daily operations. “They all kind of have their own little helping hand in the business. They are brought up knowing it and working with it now, so one day they will take the business forward.”
Her husband Jonny was involved in the construction of the pods, her sons help manage the firewood, and her daughter assists with turnover duties.
Supporting local enterprise is another pillar of the retreat’s ethos. The business sources its breakfast and BBQ packs from Tony Harrisons in Cockermouth, birthday setups and flowers from Gift and Stitch in Aspatria, welcome biscuits from Delicious Doughnuts and Delights, and chocolates from Choc of the North.
The retreat’s sole full-time employee is also local, aligning with the family’s commitment to community integration.
While the business has stabilized over the past four years, Emma noted that there remains room for future expansion and diversification. Ideas under consideration include full-site rental packages and new offerings to broaden the retreat’s appeal.
For professionals in the outdoor hospitality sector, Castle Guards Farm Retreat offers a case study in integrating glamping accommodations into a working farm.
By leveraging family labor, embracing local supplier partnerships, and maintaining a strong customer focus, the Hind family has demonstrated a replicable model for other rural landowners considering alternative revenue streams.
