Erw Glas Campsite Submits Plans to Expand Glamping and Touring Facilities

Erw Glas Campsite in the Conwy Valley has submitted plans for an upgrade and expansion of its facilities. The site, located at Tan Y Ffordd on Llanrwst Road, Maenan, is seeking permission from Conwy County Council to change the use of the land and modify the current accommodation offerings.

The applicants, Mr. and Mrs. Allan and Rachael Sawyer, propose the installation of 10 shepherds’ huts and a combined maximum of five touring caravans, motorhomes, or tents. This would replace the previously approved 15 units. Plans also include a new sewerage treatment plant.

A planning statement submitted with the application noted that Erw Glas Campsite is an established rural tourism site on the west side of the A470, situated between Llandudno Junction and Llanrwst.

“The current owners acquired the site in December 2020. The COVID pandemic has accelerated change in the tourism market in the county, along with shifts away from historically traditional touring caravanning and tenting to increasing demand for motorhomes and more significantly ‘glamping’ accommodation,” the statement said.

The applicants added: “The applicants are now looking to the future and intend to invest significantly in the site with an increased offer of glamping units (up to 10 units as proposed) and flexibility for a mix of up to five touring caravans, motorhomes, or tents (in combination).”

In addition to this application, a separate proposal for a replacement amenity block has already been submitted. The plans are expected to be considered at an upcoming planning committee meeting at Conwy County Council’s Coed Pella headquarters. No date for the meeting has been confirmed, according to NorthWalesLive.

For outdoor hospitality operators, this development reflects a broader industry trend toward glamping and diversified accommodation offerings.

As rural tourism sites adapt to shifting visitor preferences, investing in flexible accommodation options can enhance competitiveness and revenue potential while also responding to sustainability and infrastructure needs.
