Craig Tara Holiday Park Approved for Major Expansion with New Caravan Pitches

In a significant development for South Ayrshire’s tourism sector, Craig Tara Holiday Park has been given the green light by councilors to proceed with its plans to transform an existing golf course into nearly 140 new caravan pitches. This decision comes after a detailed review process, addressing various concerns raised by the local community and stakeholders.

Craig Tara Holiday Park, a staple of the region’s leisure and tourism offerings since its inception just after World War Two, has evolved from its early days as Butlins Ayr to its current incarnation under the Haven brand since 1999.

The park’s proposal aims to cater to the growing demand for caravan and holiday accommodations, reflecting broader trends in the tourism industry, as reported by STV News.

The development faced opposition primarily due to concerns over potential traffic congestion on Dunure Road, which critics argued could exacerbate existing traffic issues and increase the risk of accidents. Additionally, there were worries about the possible rise in crime and anti-social behavior, as well as the loss of valued green spaces.

In response to these concerns, Craig Tara Holiday Park proposed several mitigation measures, including road widening to create an additional lane of carriageway extending north towards the check-in location within the site.

This plan is designed to facilitate better access and internal queuing for approximately 30 cars, aiming to alleviate the anticipated increase in traffic flow. A new 1.5m wide path is also part of the proposal, intended to connect with an existing path and improve pedestrian access.

The South Ayrshire Council’s Regulatory Panel, after postponing their decision to conduct a site visit, ultimately approved the application. This decision was influenced by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance’s withdrawal of its initial objection after reviewing the proposed traffic mitigation measures, as reported by the council.

Despite receiving 223 objections, the planning officers did not find these concerns sufficient to merit refusal of the application. The officers highlighted the project’s potential to promote tourism and accommodate the growth of an existing rural tourism business, aligning with regional development goals.

Environmental considerations were also part of the planning discussions, with proposals to plant semi-mature trees to ensure quicker screening and minimize the visual impact of the new caravan pitches. This approach aims to address concerns about the loss of green spaces and maintain the area’s natural beauty.

The expansion of Craig Tara Holiday Park is expected to have a positive impact on local tourism, providing additional accommodation options for visitors and supporting the region’s economy.

The development underscores the importance of balancing growth with community and environmental concerns, ensuring that the benefits of tourism development are realized while mitigating potential negative impacts.

As Craig Tara Holiday Park prepares for this next phase, the project serves as a case study in navigating the complexities of local development, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. The park’s expansion, set against the backdrop of South Ayrshire’s scenic coast, reflects the evolving landscape of holiday tourism in Scotland.
