Council Set to Review Proposed Campsite, Wedding Venue in Newington

Beachborough Park, a country estate in Newington near Folkestone, submitted plans to create a new wedding destination and campsite.

The application is currently under review by Folkestone & Hythe District Council, with a decision expected in September. If approved, Wallis hopes to have the campsite and wedding venue operational by next year.

The Grade II-listed property, dating back to 1813, has a history spanning over two centuries. Today, the estate offers five bed-and-breakfast units and an Airbnb holiday let, but owner Rob Wallis envisions diversifying the property’s offerings due to “high demand.”

According to an article published by Kent Online, the proposed plans include erecting a temporary marquee within a two-acre walled garden to host up to 10 weddings annually, each accommodating up to 100 guests.

This white or natural cream-colored structure, measuring 12m x 18m and standing approximately 4.5 to 5 meters tall, would be installed for each event and removed afterward. Additionally, the proposed seasonal camping site would operate from April to September.

Wallis, who took over the estate management from his father in 2019, explains his motivation for expansion, stating, “Our occupancy level across the year is in the region of around 85-88%. The accommodation options are really popular, and we’ve got sufficient demand to be able to offer alternatives.”

He emphasized that the camping and weddings will be on a seasonal basis and won’t be permanent. The wedding venue and campsite would also not operate simultaneously, ensuring a peaceful environment for all guests.

Another aspect of the proposal is the addition of amenities. The plans include repurposing an existing modern barn within the walled garden to provide kitchen facilities, toilets, and showers for campers and wedding guests. Access and parking would be available via an existing route to the east of the walled garden.

Wallis emphasizes the importance of maintaining the estate’s character: “We’re very mindful of the historic nature of the estate. My wife and I actually got married here ourselves, so we know it’s a really lovely place to get married.”
