As prolonged dry conditions persist across parts of the UK, Compass, a specialist provider of caravan and leisure insurance, has issued a warning to caravan owners about an increased risk of flash flooding.
The company highlights how compacted, parched ground is less capable of absorbing sudden downpours, which could lead to damaging runoff.
The warning comes as dry spells create a sense of safety for holidaymakers and site operators.
However, Compass emphasizes that when rain eventually arrives, the hardened ground may lead to severe flash floods, posing significant risks to caravans and campsites.
“The ground becomes hard and compacted after extended dry periods, which means when heavy rain does come, the water simply runs off the surface rather than soaking in,” said Kevin Minnear, head of underwriting at Compass.
“This runoff can lead to dangerous flash floods, even in areas that aren’t typically considered high risk,” Minnear added.
To help mitigate potential losses, Compass is advising caravan owners to review their insurance policies to ensure they are adequately covered for flood damage. This is especially important for those whose caravans are located in low-lying or historically flood-prone areas.
Flash flooding can result in substantial damage to caravans, including internal fittings, electronics, and exterior structures such as awnings and decking.
In more severe cases, flooding can cause structural issues that render static caravans uninhabitable.
In response to the increased threat, Compass has outlined several practical steps for caravan owners and site managers. These include closely monitoring local weather alerts, avoiding pitches near rivers or in natural dips, and elevating valuables to protect against low-level water intrusion.
Compass also encourages caravan owners to establish an emergency evacuation plan. This should include identifying safe routes and preparing a kit with essential supplies in the event that quick action is required during flooding.
“Many of our policies offer protection against weather-related damage, but not all insurance is the same,” Minnear said.
“We strongly recommend that customers review their documents or speak with their provider to understand exactly what is and isn’t covered,” Minnear added.
Compass, which has been providing specialist caravan insurance for more than 40 years, continues to support the industry with expert insights and coverage tailored to the needs of the outdoor hospitality sector.
