Compass, a UK-based provider of specialist caravan and leisure insurance, is calling on caravan owners to improve safety awareness after revealing that 60.5% of touring caravan insurance claims in the past year were due to accidental damage.
The data, collected between March 2024 and March 2025, highlights a trend as more Britons embrace domestic travel and caravan holidays. Common incidents include reversing accidents, collisions with fixed objects, and challenges maneuvering in tight spaces.
Kevin Minnear, head of underwriting at Compass, said many of these claims stem from driver difficulties related to visibility and alignment when reversing.
“Hitting curbs and posts from misjudging turn angles or road positioning can also result in costly damage,” Minnear said.
He noted that other causes of damage include loss of control due to swaying or instability at high speeds or in windy conditions. Inexperienced drivers may also struggle with parking and navigating tight spaces at caravan parks and service stations.
To help reduce the risk of incidents, Compass released guidance emphasizing the importance of matching caravan and tow vehicle weights, balancing loads, practicing reversing techniques, and adjusting driving habits to suit towing conditions.
The insurer also stressed the importance of conducting thorough pre-journey safety checks, including verifying tyre pressures, lights, mirrors, and towing attachments. Drivers are reminded to ensure they are licensed and follow speed limits specific to towing.
Compass recommends investing in reversing cameras and using spotters when maneuvering in confined areas.
With thousands of caravans expected on UK roads during the Easter season, the company emphasized the need for comprehensive insurance policies. Unlike auto insurance, a separate caravan policy is required to cover caravan-related damages.
Minnear said, “Many caravan accidents are avoidable with the right precautions. We urge all caravan owners to familiarise themselves with safe towing practices and ensure their insurance provides adequate coverage.”
He also highlighted accredited training offered by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency as a tool to improve towing skills. “Some insurers offer a discount upon successful completion,” he added.
Compass, which has offered caravan insurance for more than 45 years, received the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award, recognizing its commitment to customer service
