Cherry Tree Holiday Park Wins Approval for Permanent Event License Amid Community Debate

Cherry Tree Holiday Park, located in the serene village of Burgh Castle and part of the Parkdean Resorts, has recently achieved a milestone by securing a permanent event license from the Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

This license will allow the park to host a variety of events, including wrestling, live music, and sporting contests, extending up to 2 am without the need for repeated temporary permits.

Previously, the park was required to apply for a temporary license for each event, a process that limited its ability to plan long-term and streamline its event offerings. The new permanent license is expected to enhance the park’s operational efficiency and attract more visitors by offering a consistent schedule of events.

However, the application process revealed significant concerns among the local community. Residents of Burgh Castle, including Sharon Hollis who lives nearby, voiced apprehensions about the potential noise and disruption.

Hollis particularly expressed fears that the nature of the events could attract a clientele different from the predominantly family-oriented visitors, potentially altering the community’s character.

During the licensing committee meeting, additional concerns were raised by members of the Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC) regarding the potential increase in noise levels from event crowds, as reported by the Eastern Daily Press.

Brian Swan, chairman of Burgh Castle Parish Council, emphasized the importance of restricting event attendance strictly to the holiday park’s guests to prevent further disturbances.

In response, a representative from Parkdean Resorts reassured the committee and the community. They stated that the park had no plans to increase the number of events held annually and clarified that tickets would only be sold to guests staying at the park, not to the general public.

This policy aims to control the number of attendees and mitigate any potential negative impact on the local area.

Supporting their commitment to community harmony, the Parkdean representative highlighted that over the past four years, during which the park hosted 40 events, there had been no complaints from locals regarding noise or disturbances.

After thorough discussion and consideration of the community’s concerns, the council members decided in a private session to approve the license with specific conditions aimed at minimizing noise impact. One key stipulation was that all outdoor wrestling events must conclude by 11 pm, a measure designed to ensure the nighttime peace of the village.

Parkdean Resorts agreed to the conditions laid out by the council, noting specifically that they had no intention of hosting outdoor wrestling events, thereby aligning their operational plans with community preferences.

This approval marks a significant development for Cherry Tree Holiday Park, allowing it to enhance its offerings while being mindful of maintaining a good relationship with the Burgh Castle community.

The decision demonstrates a successful balance between business development and community welfare, promising a positive impact on local tourism and economic activity.
