Castlerigg Hall, Park Cliffe Recognized at Cumbria Tourism Awards

Outstanding contributions to Cumbria’s tourism sector were recognised this week during the annual Cumbria Tourism Awards, held on Tuesday, July 8, at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal.

The event brought together businesses and individuals from across the region, celebrating a broad spectrum of achievements in accommodation, attractions, and visitor experiences.

A total of 18 awards were presented, with categories covering both longstanding and emerging segments of the tourism economy. Among the honorees were glamping and holiday park operators, distilleries, historic venues, and cultural institutions.

Castlerigg Hall Caravan Camping Glamping received the Regenerative Tourism Award, a category reflecting the growing importance of sustainable and environmentally mindful practices in outdoor hospitality.

In addition, Park Cliffe was named Camping, Glamping & Holiday Park of the Year, with The Quiet Site receiving a highly commended distinction in the same category.

These recognitions reflect the increasing competitiveness and innovation within the outdoor hospitality and glamping market, particularly in a region where natural beauty and heritage attract both domestic and international visitors.

The event was hosted by mountaineer and speaker Nigel Vardy, known as “Mr Frostbite,” who shared personal stories before announcing the winners.

Gill Haigh, managing director of Cumbria Tourism, underscored the value of the awards in spotlighting the broader economic and social contributions of tourism.

“It was a truly fantastic evening, filled with pride, celebration, and a genuine sense of togetherness,” she said. “Every finalist and winner represents the very best of Cumbria’s world-renowned visitor economy, and every single person involved should feel incredibly proud.”

Haigh further noted the strategic importance of the tourism sector, which supports employment, draws investment, and contributes £4.6 billion annually to the county’s economy.

“These awards are about far more than trophies, they’re about recognising the hard work, determination and passion that makes our county such a special place,” she told The Mail.

For outdoor hospitality business owners, particularly those in the glamping and camping sectors, the recognition of regenerative and sustainable tourism models signals an ongoing shift in consumer expectations.

The achievements of winners like Castlerigg Hall and Park Cliffe illustrate how alignment with environmental values and community integration can not only enhance guest experiences but also distinguish properties in a competitive market.Several award recipients are expected to advance to the national stage, representing Cumbria at the 2026 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.
