A glamping business based in Pembrokeshire has introduced a series of sustainability initiatives through support from Business Wales.
Nights Under Canvas, a family-owned company that provides tent-for-hire services for a variety of occasions, including weddings, corporate events, and festivals, has committed to reducing its environmental impact by adopting new practices aimed at lowering its carbon footprint.
As part of its efforts, the company registered with Business Wales’ Green Growth Pledge, a program that assists Welsh businesses in implementing sustainable changes.
Through this initiative, the company engaged with Sarah Gore, a decarbonisation adviser at Business Wales, to review its operations and identify opportunities to improve environmental performance.
According to a press release, several steps have since been taken, including prioritising local suppliers, using more efficient transportation methods for its bell tents, and managing waste responsibly.
A notable new initiative is the company’s collaboration with Saundersfoot-based shop Ecoast and upcycling brand Recycling Rachel.
In this partnership, damaged airbeds from Nights Under Canvas are collected by Ecoast and sent to Recycling Rachel, where the material is repurposed into consumer products such as washbags, wallets, and bumbags. These items are then sold in stores under the Nights Under Canvas name.
Steven Bradley, owner of Nights Under Canvas, said the company’s environmental commitment aligns with his personal values.
“I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the environment, so finding ways that we could improve on our sustainability efforts and reduce our carbon footprint was a major priority for us.”
”Sarah’s support has been invaluable and has helped us to make a meaningful impact within our business and community. We are so happy that we have the opportunity to not only reduce our waste but upcycle our airbeds into something new for our customers.”
In addition to its sustainability efforts, the business has benefited from digital support provided by Business Wales.
Workshops and training in areas such as website design, marketing, and search engine optimisation (SEO) have helped improve the company’s online presence and reach new audiences. A Business Wales digital expert guided Bradley in refining the business’ digital strategy to increase visibility and engagement.
Sarah Gore commended the business for its proactive approach.
“It has been truly inspiring to see Steven’s passion for sustainability manifest through the business’s new venture. He was always eager to find more conscious solutions and improve processes to reduce environmental impact.”
”By continuing to improve their business practices, I know that Nights Under Canvas will continue to be a great example for others to follow in promoting greener growth.”
For outdoor hospitality businesses looking to enhance their sustainability, this case presents practical insights. Partnering with local suppliers, rethinking logistics, and identifying ways to reuse materials can contribute to reducing environmental impact.
Initiatives like the Green Growth Pledge also offer a framework and expert guidance to help businesses implement lasting changes.
