Breckland Meadows Touring Park in Swaffham is set to expand its capacity following approval from Breckland Council for an increase in caravan units on-site.
The operator, Birch’s Park Homes, received consent to add 14 more caravans to its existing setup, bringing the total number of caravans to 84. Of these, two will be static units while the remainder will be touring caravans.
This recent decision marks the third successful application by the park to expand its capacity in recent years, according to a report by Dereham Times.
Previously operating with 54 units, the site increased to 70 caravans before applying for the current extension.
Alongside the additional units, the company also sought a modification to the certificate of lawfulness, requesting a change in use to allow for permanent residential occupation of the caravans rather than limiting them to holiday usage.
In a statement accompanying the approval, Breckland Council’s planning officers stated, “The council considers that the applicant has demonstrated the land can be used for permanent residential occupation of 82 touring caravans and two static caravans.”
This development signals a continued shift within parts of the caravan park sector toward accommodating longer-term stays.
For industry stakeholders, particularly site owners and operators, the expansion underscores both the potential and regulatory pathways for growing park capacity and adapting to evolving market demands.
From a strategic standpoint, transitioning from holiday-only use to permanent or semi-permanent residency can diversify revenue streams and attract new customer segments.
However, such changes also require careful navigation of local planning policies and community considerations.
Operators considering similar expansions may find value in examining how Breckland Meadows structured its phased applications, aligning operational growth with planning compliance and council expectations.
