The village of Betws-y-Coed in North Wales has been named the best holiday destination in the UK by Go Outdoors. The village, known for its slate and stone buildings that exude Welsh heritage, is surrounded by forests and serves as the gateway to the mountains of Eryri.
It is home to two rivers and an activity hotspot like Zip World Fforest. The village also boasts a plethora of fantastic places to eat and stay, which contributed to its top ranking, ahead of places like Ambleside, Tenby, and Edinburgh.
Go Outdoors compiled the list by looking at a variety of factors, from activities to do to walking trails and the natural environment. Betws-y-Coed scored highly, with top marks for hiking and bike trails and nature.
The village had an overall score of 8.4. Other places in Wales also made it to the top 20, including Tenby, Anglesey, Llandudno, and Cardigan in Ceredigion, as reported by the North Wales Live.
The ranking is a significant boost for the local businesses in Betws-y-Coed, especially at a time when people’s budgets are being squeezed by the cost of living crisis. Glenn Evans, director of the Royal Oak and Waterloo Hotels in Betws y Coed and chairman of North Wales Tourism, said it was really positive news for the area.
The Go Outdoors judges described Betws-y-Coed as a gateway to Snowdonia and its neighboring towns, offering a distinctly magical setting surrounded by forests, walking trails such as the Cyrau Walk, and mountain bike tours on routes such as the Gwydir Mawr and Bach.
