Barlwyd Glamping Offers Off-Grid Experience in North Wales Slate Country

Barlwyd Glamping, an off-grid accommodation site located in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales, is gaining attention for its remote shepherd’s huts and low-impact amenities.

Positioned within the rugged terrain of the former Llechwedd mine, the huts form part of a broader accommodation offering that includes Llechwedd Glamping and the Plas Weunydd Hotel

Accessible only via an electric golf cart ride along gravel tracks, the site offers guests a secluded stay amid the UNESCO-listed slate landscape of Snowdonia.

The shepherd’s huts are built to operate entirely off-grid, powered by hydro energy and equipped with integrated water and sewage systems, according to a report by WalesOnline

While these units lack connections for high-energy appliances such as hairdryers and laptops, each hut includes essentials such as a kitchenette, a wood-burning stove, a bathroom with a hot water tank, and a king-size bed.

As the operator notes, the huts are “charming outposts for those needing a wildly romantic adventure,” catering to travelers seeking simplicity, sustainability, and disconnection from daily digital routines.

One key feature setting Barlwyd Glamping apart is its eco-conscious infrastructure. The use of hydro power makes the site carbon neutral, aligning with broader industry efforts to improve environmental performance across the tourism and outdoor accommodation sectors.

For glamping and campground business owners, the model presents a potential blueprint for incorporating sustainable technologies into remote and low-density accommodation formats.

Guests have access to a communal wood-fired sauna, exclusive to shepherd’s hut occupants, located on the moorland with views of the surrounding mountains and lake.

Combined with the remoteness and minimalist lifestyle, the offering appeals to a growing market segment of eco-tourists and digital detox travelers.

The property’s proximity to attractions such as Zip World Llechwedd and on-site dining at Plas Weunydd Hotel also supports wider regional tourism development.

As glamping continues to evolve from a niche trend into a resilient category of the outdoor hospitality industry, Barlwyd’s combination of isolation, sustainability, and basic luxury represents a compelling case study.
