Aldeby Campsite’s Glamping Plans Met with Privacy and Noise Concerns

A proposal to introduce glamping pods and hot tubs at a campsite in Aldeby, Norfolk, has prompted a wave of objections from local residents.

The application, submitted by David Castleton to South Norfolk Council, outlines plans to install five glamping pods at Lily Meadow, a site off Lily Lane. Each pod would include a hot tub, with the development intended to replace the current mix of camping and caravan use.

Several neighbours have submitted formal objections, raising concerns about the impact on privacy and noise levels. One resident wrote:

“The development would result in significant loss of privacy and tranquillity to our homes and gardens. The introduction of multiple glamping pods, with associated hot tubs, outdoor seating, lighting, and vehicle activity, will create noise and disturbance.”

In response to concerns, the planning documents include restrictions aimed at limiting disruption, according to a report by the Eastern Daily Press.

The site would enforce quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., with bans on external speakers, sound systems, or amplified music at all times.

The statement also noted that events such as stag and hen parties would not be permitted, describing these measures as a way to “protect the peaceful character of the area.”

Supporters of the proposal argue that glamping typically draws visitors who spend money in nearby restaurants, attractions, and shops, providing a boost to local businesses.

The planning statement suggested the project could “contribute to the economic vitality of the area.”

However, not all residents agree. One objector argued, “Any spending in the area will have no direct economic benefits to any of the local residents who would be affected by it. It will just be a money-making exercise for one individual to the detriment of many others.”

For business owners in the outdoor hospitality sector, the case highlights an ongoing challenge: balancing diversification efforts with community concerns.

Glamping developments are increasingly seen as a way to attract new customer segments, particularly travelers seeking comfort-focused outdoor experiences.

However, as this case shows, projects that alter the character of existing sites or raise questions about noise and privacy can face resistance from neighbours, which may delay or prevent approvals.

South Norfolk Council is currently considering the application, which is listed under reference 2025/2246.
