Grazalema’s tourism sector is slowly recovering following the mass evacuation on 5 February, prompted by record rainfall. The town received nearly 600 litres of rain per square metre in a single day, leading authorities to establish an exclusion zone and displace residents.
As accommodation providers reopen, business remains limited, and concerns about road safety continue to affect visitor confidence.
At the La Mejorana guesthouse, rooms are currently being used to house families unable to return home, including owners Andrés and Ana, whose residence remains within the exclusion zone. Although the guesthouse is technically open, it is not generating income.
Andrés told SUR, “Everything is on hold until we see a return to normality.” He added that the business may remain closed over the upcoming Andalusia Day long weekend and could delay a full reopening until March. Local bars have seen some day-trip visitors, but the “social alarm” around the town’s red zone has made covering staff-related fixed costs challenging.
Casa de las Piedras, located outside the exclusion zone, began reactivating its administration on Monday, 19 February. Manager Estela noted that bookings were full before the storms but that the current priority is preventing cancellations ahead of the 28 February public holiday.
The Tajo Rodillo campsite, situated near popular hiking trails, reopened last Tuesday after extensive cleaning. Manager Pepi reported that inquiries have mainly concerned road conditions rather than new reservations. The campsite initially hosted three families who were displaced but have since returned home.
Despite gradual progress, 86 residents remain displaced, and the exclusion zone is only being slowly reduced. Tourism operators face the dual challenge of restoring visitor confidence and demonstrating that Grazalema is safe.
For businesses in outdoor hospitality, this situation underscores the importance of crisis management, clear communication with guests, and flexible operations in areas prone to extreme weather events.
