Rising Hotel Prices Drive More Italians to Campsites in 2025

A recent report from Federconsumatori, an Italian consumer organization, indicates that rising accommodation costs are continuing to shift domestic travel preferences in Italy, with campsites seeing a 6% increase in bookings compared to 2024.

The data, compiled by the O.N.F. – Federconsumatori National Observatory, shows that holidaymakers are responding to broader economic pressures by seeking more cost-effective ways to travel.

The research reveals that only 43.2% of Italians plan to go on holiday this year, and among them, a significant majority—54%—are opting for shorter breaks lasting three to five days.

Many are also relying on accommodations with friends or relatives to further reduce expenses. For those still pursuing paid lodging, camping remains an increasingly popular option, especially in seaside areas.

Despite its relative affordability, camping is not exempt from inflationary pressures. Prices for camping holidays have risen modestly this year, with pitch costs for large tents and lodge tents both increasing by 7%.

On the other hand, some costs have decreased; notably, the average fee for bringing pets to campsites has dropped by 16%.

According to Federconsumatori, a family of four—two adults and two children—spending one week at a coastal campsite during high season can expect to pay around €1,577.91.

This figure includes the pitch, entry fees, meals, and beach services, and represents a 3.4% increase over 2024 rates, according to a report by Idealista

Those seeking upgraded comfort by staying in bungalows will pay significantly more, with average costs reaching €2,600.20 per week—an increase of 2.5% from last year and about 65% higher than the tent-based alternative.

Glamping, a hybrid option that combines outdoor living with upscale amenities, continues to attract travelers willing to spend more for comfort. The average weekly cost for a lodge tent now stands at €2,415.34, up 4.9% from 2024.

For outdoor hospitality professionals, these figures present a dual opportunity: on one hand, the market for budget-conscious travelers is expanding, reinforcing the demand for affordable tent and pitch accommodations.

On the other hand, the growing interest in glamping suggests sustained demand for premium outdoor experiences—particularly those that maintain a balance between comfort, nature, and cost-efficiency.

Operators may benefit by offering tiered pricing strategies and diversified lodging options to meet both ends of this evolving market spectrum.

With economic factors continuing to shape Italian travel trends in 2025, campsite owners, RV park managers, and glamping operators are well-positioned to attract both value-seeking families and luxury-oriented guests, provided they can adapt to changing pricing expectations and seasonal demand patterns.
