Camping Mistral, a newly launched campsite and eco-retreat in Italy’s Valle Maira, opened its doors in April, offering a range of accommodations for outdoor travelers.
Located in the protected Maritime Alps National Park in the Piedmont region, the site provides 12 tent pitches, six caravan spaces, and three pre-equipped tents.
The property is managed by the same family behind Locanda Mistral, a nearby alpine lodge known for its sustainable operations.
Facilities at Camping Mistral include a picnic area, a children’s play area, and a small shop and bar that are operational daily from June through September.
Shared sanitary amenities on-site comprise seven restrooms and four showers with hot water.
In addition to basic accommodations, the retreat is promoting a schedule of seasonal programming. During the summer high season, guests can participate in nature-based activities such as wild plant and herb excursions, yoga sessions, and stargazing events.
Direct access to local hiking trails offers a key attraction for guests, allowing them to explore the surrounding alpine landscapes.
The campsite’s proximity to Locanda Mistral—less than three miles away—enables guests to make use of the lodge’s amenities, including an organic restaurant, spa facilities, and a garden maintained with sustainable practices.
“The Maira Valley is simple and wild—there are only a few valleys in the Alps that have been preserved to this extent,” said Renato Botte, owner of both properties, in a statement to Travel + Leisure.
“The synergy of the locanda [an Italian inn] and campsite ensures that the special location of Sorgenti del Maira [Source of the Maira] can be preserved for future generations. This very consideration led us to create a special campsite. It’s a sustainable tourism project that’s just starting out and will continue to develop over the coming years.”
Camping Mistral’s entrance fee is $17 per adult, with no charge for children under 12. Tent pitches are included in the entry price, while caravan spots cost $17 per night.
Pre-furnished tents with bedding are available for $55 per person, per night. Reservations can be made online.
For professionals in the outdoor hospitality sector, the model presented by Camping Mistral demonstrates how small-scale, sustainability-driven developments can diversify regional tourism and create complementary revenue streams through integrated services between lodging and camping offerings.
