Waterford in Ireland has been awarded €893,454 in funding to enhance outdoor recreation infrastructure across the county, with projects planned in Cappoquin, Villierstown, and Dunmore East.
According to a news article by Waterford News & Star, Waterford TD and Minister of State for Local Government and Planning John Cummins welcomed the announcement, highlighting the benefits for local communities.
“Today’s announcement offers significant economic and social benefits for our rural communities in Waterford, giving families a variety of activities that are easily accessible, low-cost and on their doorstep,” Minister Cummins said.
“Anyone who has ever been to Waterford knows just how fortunate we are here in Waterford to have so many places of natural beauty. The ORIS aims to improve these amenities even further, making them even more enjoyable places to visit,” Minister Cummins added.
The funding comes from measures two and three of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).
Of the total grant aid, €493,454 will go toward the Cappoquin Railway Bridge Loop Walk, including the development of phase two of the Cappoquin Slipway to Viaduct Viewing Point and the stretch from Cappoquin Rowing Club grounds to Avonmore Bridge.
In Dunmore East, €200,000 has been allocated to the Coastal Walk Upgrade Project, which will improve the trail surface between Portally Cove and Ballymacaw Cove.
The Villierstown Quay Enhancement Project also received €200,000 to upgrade facilities for water-based outdoor activities.
Minister Cummins expressed his anticipation for the completion of the projects. “I look forward to seeing these projects being completed in the time ahead. I’d encourage everyone to make use of the amazing outdoor facilities we have on offer throughout the county,” he said.
“I am very much looking forward to seeing the progression of the three projects, which will enhance our amenities even further,” he added.
Nationally, €16.5 million has been allocated to 63 outdoor recreation projects. Waterford TD, Government Chief Whip, and Minister for Mental Health Mary Butler also welcomed the funding, praising the work of Waterford City and County Council.
“Investment in outdoor recreation plays a key role in further enhancing our most beautiful and unique outdoor amenities. It also provides a boost to local economies in towns & villages throughout Waterford by attracting visitors and furthering our reputation as a destination county for active tourism,” said Minister Butler.
The funding will support upgrades that make outdoor spaces more accessible, enjoyable, and attractive, boosting Waterford’s position as a destination for outdoor recreation and tourism.
