Proposed Culdaff Caravan Park Aims to Serve Tourists and Mica-Affected Residents

A planning application has been submitted for a new motorhome and caravan park in the village of Culdaff, County Donegal.

The proposed site, led by Bruach Abhann Cuil Dabhcha Teoranta, aims to provide four motorhome berths with charging points and 18 caravan berths, according to documents filed with Donegal County Council.

The development is designed to serve both local and tourism-related demand. The applicant stated in the submission that the caravan park will facilitate both ‘the mica applicant and the tourist’, depending on their needs.

This dual-purpose model may reflect a growing trend in outdoor hospitality toward serving mixed-use clientele, including those impacted by local housing challenges such as the mica crisis and those visiting for leisure.

In addition to the core accommodation offering, the plan includes a community-supported infrastructure project: “A footpath is being proposed by the Culdaff Community in partnership with Donegal County Council to facilitate this location within the village of Culdaff,” the applicant noted.

According to Donegal Daily, a further component of the proposal includes the creation of a water sports amenity along the local stream, intended to enhance the site’s appeal for tourists and guests.

“It is also planned to develop a watersport amenity along the local stream as a tourist attraction to cater for the residents of this proposed caravan park,” the statement added.

Donegal County Council is expected to deliver a decision on the planning application by the first week of September.

If approved, this development would contribute to regional tourism infrastructure while also supporting alternative accommodations for locals, a dynamic that could become increasingly relevant to business owners navigating changing guest demographics.

For outdoor hospitality professionals, this project reflects an evolving landscape where small-scale developments are integrated with community initiatives and local housing strategies.

Operators may find value in monitoring how such dual-use models are received by planning authorities and the broader community, especially in regions experiencing housing or environmental pressures.
