Making Tracks Opens in Ballybrophy with Support from Fáilte Ireland Funding

Making Tracks, a new low-carbon tourism enterprise in Ballybrophy, County Laois, has officially opened for bookings, offering glamping, horse-drawn wagon tours, and accommodation in a restored Irish Country House hostel.

The project, led by wood-craft restorer Eoin Reardon, received €250,000 in funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme. The scheme is co-funded by the EU and the Government of Ireland under the EU Just Transition Fund.

As part of the initiative, the former Ballybrophy House was renovated into a hostel adjacent to Ballybrophy train station.

According to Laois Today, five glamping units were constructed, and horse-drawn wagon experiences were developed across south Laois. Accessibility upgrades, including universally accessible showers, pathways, and site access, were also introduced to ensure the project is inclusive.

The Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme was designed to support the Midlands’ transition away from peat dependency by diversifying the local economy, creating jobs, and developing sustainable visitor experiences.

Covering eight counties in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and Ireland’s Ancient East, the program seeks to position the Midlands as a leading regenerative tourism destination with both domestic and international appeal.

Angela McEvoy, Director of Services at Laois County Council, said:

“I am delighted to see the opening of Making Tracks, a fantastic addition to the varied tourism offering in County Laois, particularly in the west of the County and in such close proximity to Ballybrophy Train Station, one of two Age-friendly Stations within the Country.”

”The creation of sustainable enterprise across the county is a key objective for Laois County Council, and we are pleased to support this tourism initiative, which will provide employment opportunities locally and bring more visitors to Laois to experience the hidden treasures we possess.”

For outdoor hospitality operators, the launch highlights how public funding programs are being used to diversify rural tourism with low-carbon, experience-driven offerings.

It underscores the growing emphasis on accessibility and sustainability, which may serve as a model for other regions seeking to attract eco-conscious travelers.

Orla Carroll, Director of Product Development at Fáilte Ireland, noted:

“By delivering unique, low-carbon experiences and quality accommodation, it strengthens the region’s appeal for both domestic and international visitors. It also highlights the transformative impact that initiatives like the EU Just Transition Fund can have on rural tourism development.”
