Longford County Council Denies Planning Permission for Glamping Pods

A proposal for a glamping pods development in Moyne, County Longford, has been denied planning permission due to concerns over the area’s landscape sensitivity.

The application was submitted by Padraig Reilly to Longford County Council in September 2024. It sought approval to construct four glamping pods and one multi-use pod at Drumhalry, along with associated facilities.

These included a utility/storage shed, parking spaces, signage, biodiversity landscaping with a pond, a bored well, lighting, a soak pit, a new entrance, gates, boundary walls, and a wastewater treatment unit, among other site works.

According to a report by Longford Live, the refusal, issued on December 23, 2024, cited the location’s proximity to Lough Gowna, a freshwater lake, and a proposed Natural Heritage Area (pNHA).

The site falls within a zone classified by the Longford County Development Plan 2021–2027 as an area of high amenity and landscape quality, requiring protection from developments that could harm the landscape’s visual and environmental integrity.

According to the planners, the development would be “visually obtrusive and have a detrimental impact on the visual amenity of the surrounding landscape.”

The decision also referenced Policy CPO 14.19 of the Longford County Development Plan, which emphasizes the importance of safeguarding areas of high landscape sensitivity from inappropriate developments.

The planners determined that the proposed development’s size, layout, and design were inconsistent with the surrounding environment and would adversely affect the area’s visual appeal.

During the planning process, four submissions were received in relation to the development. Two were from local residents, Ciaran and Laura McCabe, submitted on October 10 and October 20, 2024.

Additional submissions came from the National Environmental Health Service (HSE) on September 17 and from Uisce Éireann on September 21, 2024.

These submissions contributed to the overall assessment of the development’s potential impact on the landscape and surrounding community.
