Five-Unit Glamping Development Planned Near Hill of Tara

A planning application for a new glamping development in Castletown, Tara has been submitted to Meath County Council. The proposal, lodged on November 27 by applicants Paul Kearns and Kathryn Walley, outlines plans to construct five one-bedroom detached glamping units, each designed with its own private amenity space. The application also includes a communal amenity area intended for shared guest use.

According to the submission, the project would incorporate supporting infrastructure such as seven car parking spaces, bicycle parking for eight bicycles, and a service building containing a reception area, office space and a utility room.

A proprietary wastewater treatment system with a polishing filter is planned as part of the site’s servicing requirements. According to the Irish Independent, additional works include the development of a new entrance, internal driveway, pedestrian walkways and other site improvements needed to deliver the planned accommodation.

The proposal comes as the Tara area continues to attract strong tourism interest, driven largely by the Hill of Tara and its surrounding heritage landscape.

The site, known for its archaeological significance and countryside views, draws thousands of visitors annually who travel for cultural, historical and nature-based activities. A glamping development, if approved, would add a new type of lodging option to the local tourism mix.

For business owners in the outdoor hospitality industry, the application reflects ongoing demand for small-scale, low-impact accommodations that diversify regional tourism offerings.

Projects of this size may be particularly relevant for operators evaluating the feasibility of boutique glamping models, especially those located near heritage or natural attractions where visitor numbers remain steady year-round.

The inclusion of cycling facilities and a dedicated service building may also offer insight into design choices that support both guest experience and daily operational needs.

The council will review the application in the coming months as part of the standard planning process. If granted permission, the development could contribute to expanding Castletown’s lodging capacity while supporting continued visitor activity in the wider Tara area.
