Warm weather forecast for eastern and northeastern Iceland is driving a rise in campground reservations ahead of the weekend, with some camping facilities reporting strong demand as travelers seek out the country’s warmest expected conditions.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s latest forecast, a high-pressure system is expected to bring stable weather across much of eastern Iceland through the weekend, with temperatures forecast to exceed 20°C (68°F) in some areas. In contrast, western Iceland is expected to experience cooler conditions, with rain and daytime temperatures of approximately 50–54°F (10–12°C).
The weather outlook has led to increased interest in campgrounds across the eastern region. The main campground in Egilsstaðir is approaching full capacity, while Fljótsdalsgrund Campground, located near the popular Hengifoss waterfall, is preparing for what operators expect could become its busiest camping weekend of the year.
“There are already just over half the pitches occupied,” campground warden Hörður Már Guðmundsson told IcelandReview. “I’m afraid it’s just going to be chaos – and absolutely wonderful. Bookings are coming in very quickly now.”
Guðmundsson encouraged travelers planning to visit eastern Iceland during the warm weather period to reserve campsites in advance due to the increase in demand.
Meteorologist Þorsteinn V. Jónsson said the forecast has remained consistent in recent days, with a high-pressure system positioned over the British Isles and mainland Europe expected to sustain the current weather pattern through the weekend.
The warmest temperatures are forecast across East Iceland, the northeastern region, and the Eastfjords. Meanwhile, a series of low-pressure systems is expected to continue affecting western Iceland with cooler temperatures and rainfall.
Asked when residents of the Reykjavík area might see improved weather, Jónsson said conditions in the capital region are expected to remain largely unchanged over the coming week.
The anticipated increase in camping activity highlights the influence short-term weather forecasts can have on booking patterns, particularly during the summer travel season. For campground and caravan park operators, periods of favorable weather can generate significant spikes in reservations within a matter of days, underscoring the importance of maintaining flexible staffing, efficient reservation systems, and clear communication with guests regarding site availability.
Operators may also benefit from monitoring weather forecasts as part of their revenue management strategy, enabling them to adjust operations and prepare for sudden increases in visitor demand during peak travel periods.
The weather forecast is expected to remain in effect through the weekend, making eastern Iceland the primary destination for campers seeking the country’s warmest conditions while western regions continue to experience unsettled weather.
