Family-Run North Jutland Campsite Maintains Profitability Amid Hardships

Hedebo Strand Camping in Sæby has reported a profit after tax of nearly DKK 1.4 million for 2024, according to its recently published annual financial results.

The figure, while slightly lower than the previous year, confirms that the campsite remains financially solid despite a challenging year.

The family-owned site, which has been in operation for decades, is among the larger tourist businesses in North Jutland. With approximately 600 pitches and cabins, it records about 100,000 overnight stays annually, making it a notable contributor to the regional tourism economy.

The past year, however, was marked by difficult events. In August 2024, an employee lost his life during a trip, and shortly afterward, the site’s long-time co-owner, Inger Christensen, died following a traffic accident at the campsite.

Inger and her husband, Bendt, had taken over the site in 1968, establishing the foundation for what has become a well-known regional holiday destination.

Today, the operation is led by their son, Eric Christensen, alongside his partner, Lene Krüger. According to a report by Nordjyske, a generational transition is underway, as responsibility gradually shifts to the next family members.

At the start of the 2024 season, the campsite’s grocery store was taken over by Lene Krüger’s daughter, Sabrina Åsted Krüger, and her brother, Daniel Åsted Krüger. The long-term plan is for them to assume management of the entire campsite.

For business owners in the outdoor hospitality sector, Hedebo Strand Camping’s experience highlights the importance of succession planning and resilience in family-run enterprises.

While unforeseen events tested the business in 2024, its structured approach to generational change and its continued ability to maintain profitability underscore how long-term planning can help sustain operations during difficult periods.

For other campground operators, particularly those managing multi-generational businesses, the example demonstrates how clear transitions of responsibility can both honor legacy and secure future stability.
