Cumbria’s Wasdale Campsite Highlighted as Top UK Glamping Destination

Glamping continues to gain traction across the United Kingdom, with recent coverage highlighting Cumbria—and particularly the Lake District—as a leading destination for this form of outdoor accommodation.

The region’s combination of natural beauty, relative affordability, and accessibility has positioned it as a prime choice for domestic travelers seeking immersive, yet comfortable, outdoor experiences.

Among the notable glamping destinations in the area is the National Trust Wasdale Campsite in Seascale, Cumbria.

Situated between Whitehaven and Millom, Seascale is known for its coastal setting and historical ties dating back to Viking times. The name “Seascale” is derived from a phrase meaning “a shelter by the sea.”

The location is recognized for its sandy beaches, proximity to the Lake District, and appeal as a nature-centric holiday option.

The Wasdale Campsite, recently featured in The Telegraph, is located near Wastwater and provides easy access to prominent walking routes, including those leading to Scafell Pike, England’s tallest mountain.

According to The Telegraph: “This peaceful site is squirrelled between verdant fells near Wastwater.

It’s a walkers’ paradise, with easy access to Scafell Pike — England’s tallest mountain — as well as valley paths along worn packhorse trails and riverbanks.”

The publication also noted the site’s variety of glamping accommodations.

“Cosy wooden pods shaded by trees come with simple beds and radiators, while tepees and bell tents have the added luxury of wood-burners (you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag),” The Telegraph reported.

It also mentioned practical amenities like an on-site shop selling essentials, walking gear, and games, with pricing for a two-night self-catering stay for five starting at £162, according to a report by The Mail.

The Victorian-era seaside charm of Seascale, along with the Lake District’s enduring appeal, continues to attract visitors seeking alternatives to air travel and traditional hotel stays.

For business owners in the outdoor hospitality sector, the popularity of destinations like Wasdale underscores the growing demand for hybrid experiences that blend nature and comfort.

Operators may consider investing in nature-based amenities, flexible accommodation types, and proximity to walking or cultural trails to appeal to this expanding market.

As domestic tourism remains strong in the UK, particularly in regions like Cumbria, glamping businesses in other areas might find opportunities to model aspects of their offerings on what has been successful in the Lake District—particularly access to natural attractions and simplicity in lodging combined with basic comforts.
