Nayara Tented Camp in Costa Rica has received its first Green Globe certification, joining its sister properties Nayara Springs and Nayara Gardens under the sustainability-focused designation.
Green Globe made the announcement on April 22, 2025, marking a milestone for the luxury eco-resort brand as it expands its environmental and social impact initiatives in the region.
Located near the Arenal Volcano in a rainforest setting, Nayara Tented Camp offers safari-style tents and private plunge pools, integrating sustainability into its architectural and operational framework.
In a press release, Resort Manager Jairo Quesada stated:
“At Nayara, sustainable tourism is not just an initiative; it’s our core motivation. We are dedicated to building in harmony with the breathtaking natural environment, providing space for wildlife to thrive, and contributing meaningfully to the growth and prosperity of our local community.”
The resort’s environmental practices include construction on stilts to preserve the natural terrain and accommodate reforestation efforts. Spaces between accommodations have been left open for planting trees, including native species that attract wildlife.
This approach also supports the resort’s energy conservation strategy, which minimizes reliance on artificial heating and cooling systems through the use of natural sunlight and airflow.
Additional measures include energy-saving lighting systems and water-conserving fixtures throughout the property.
One of the resort’s most notable conservation efforts is the creation of a Sloth Sanctuary on previously deforested land. Thousands of trees have been planted to reintroduce biodiversity, particularly cecropia trees favored by sloths.
This reforestation has led to the development of a biological corridor that supports the movement of various animal species, contributing to the preservation of endangered habitats.
The resort also maintains a zero-plastic policy, replacing single-use plastics with reusable alternatives and implementing comprehensive recycling practices.
Staff receive ongoing training in waste management, emphasizing the importance of sorting and recycling materials to reduce landfill contributions.
Nayara’s commitment extends beyond environmental stewardship to community development. Over 95% of its more than 500 staff members are hired locally.
The resort provides free transportation, early childhood education, sustainable tourism training, and health services for employees and their families.
In addition, Nayara supports local schools, a nearby orphanage, and sports programs, and works with local producers to supply its on-site restaurants with fresh, locally grown ingredients.
“We take immense pride in our natural and cultural richness and are deeply committed to being environmentally and socially responsible in every aspect of our operations,” said Quesada.
“Our story is one of stunning natural beauty, providing intimate spaces, and fostering a profound connection with nature. Our mission is to offer authentic, warm, and extraordinary service, and to share the unique ‘Pura Vida’ tradition with our guests.”
For outdoor hospitality operators and developers, Nayara Tented Camp serves as a case study in integrating sustainability with luxury.
From environmental restoration to social investment, the resort demonstrates how intentional design and local engagement can enhance guest experience while advancing long-term ecological and economic resilience.
