Survey Finds Canadians Want to Travel More, But Many Haven’t Explored Beyond Home

A new national survey by Go RVing Canada reveals a significant gap between Canadians’ interest in domestic travel and their actual experiences, with 78% of respondents expressing a desire to explore more of the country, yet 43% reporting they’ve never traveled outside their home province.

The survey, conducted by Fuse Insights in May 2025, found that while most Canadians are planning local trips this year, barriers such as a lack of destination awareness or travel urgency are preventing many from venturing beyond familiar borders.

According to a press release, forty-two percent said they simply don’t know where to go, and 64% admitted they haven’t yet taken the time to plan.

Despite these hesitations, domestic travel remains a priority. Nearly two-thirds of Canadians intend to travel within the country, presenting what Go RVing Canada calls a prime opportunity to expand the nation’s domestic tourism footprint.

“It’s inspiring to see so much patriotism among Canadians this year, especially when it comes to supporting domestic travel and local businesses,” said Chris Mahony, president of Go RVing Canada.

“But it’s surprising how many of us haven’t truly experienced all that Canada has to offer,” Mahony added.

Ontario emerged as the most popular destination, with more than one-third of respondents choosing it for upcoming domestic getaways.

Quebec also followed closely, drawing over one in four travelers, while British Columbia ranked third.

Residents of Quebec are the most likely to stay local, with 78% planning to vacation within the province. Among those who will travel outside Quebec, Ontario (18%) and New Brunswick (13%) were top picks.

British Columbians and Ontarians also tend to stay close to home, with about 70% choosing local vacations.

However, when they travel beyond their borders, many opt for cross-country road trips, particularly to each other’s provinces.

Albertans are the most likely to venture beyond provincial lines, with just 55% planning local travel. Popular out-of-province destinations include British Columbia (34%) and Ontario (23%).

The survey also highlighted a broader desire among Canadians to disconnect from daily routines. Sixty-four percent want to take a break from screens, and 70% hope to spend more time with family.

Additionally, 75% say being outdoors increases their happiness.

RVing is emerging as a favored travel option. According to the 2023 RVDA Economic Impact Study, 2.1 million Canadian households own an RV.

The Go RVing Canada survey shows that 25% of respondents have been RVing, while 44% are interested in trying it.

To support first-time RVers, Go RVing Canada provides online tools such as an RV matchmaker quiz, a beginner’s guide, and destination itineraries designed to help Canadians plan road trips tailored to their needs and budget.

“With the rising costs of airfare and accommodations, RVing isn’t just an affordable way to travel, it’s a uniquely Canadian travel experience that helps you reconnect with nature, loved ones, and the joy of exploring our beautiful country,” said Mahony.

In support of Care Camps Foundation, the Canadian RV Dealers Association and General Coach have launched a fundraising giveaway offering one winner a brand-new General Coach Citation Reward RV. Proceeds will support medically supervised camp experiences for children with cancer.
