Saskatchewan Parks Launches Winter Activities From Snowshoeing to Rustic Camping

Saskatchewan’s provincial parks are inviting residents and visitors to embrace the winter season with a variety of activities and experiences designed to make the colder months memorable. From ice skating to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, Sask Parks presents an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the province’s natural beauty.

“Winter is a big part of our life in Saskatchewan, and our goal is to make this season one to remember,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said in a press release. “There are many unique experiences and fun outdoor adventures that will make our provincial parks a thrilling destination this winter.”

One highlight of this season’s offerings is the availability of Camp-Easy yurts, allowing guests to stay overnight in heated accommodations while participating in winter activities. These yurts, located at Echo Valley Provincial Park, provide a propane-heated space that sleeps up to six people, including a queen bed for added comfort. While the yurts are designed to enhance winter camping, guests are encouraged to dress warmly and prepare for cooler conditions as they are not fully insulated.

Walk-in winter camping is another feature available at several parks until March 16, offering a rustic experience for those looking to connect with nature. While reservations are not required for these sites, Sask Parks advises visitors to contact the park in advance to confirm availability and check local weather conditions.

For those planning daytime visits or short stays, there is an extensive lineup of winter activities to enjoy. Popular options include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and tobogganing, with parks offering equipment rentals for snowshoeing and skiing. Ice fishing and ice skating are also available in select parks, providing diverse opportunities for recreation during the colder months.

Several local businesses operating within the parks add to the experience, offering food options, accommodations, and other services like saunas.

One standout feature this season is the return of the “Skate the Park” ice-skating loop at Echo Valley Provincial Park. The 900-meter loop, set to open on December 26, weather permitting, winds through Aspen Campground and offers a scenic skating experience beneath fairy lights.

Skate the Park will also remain open through February 28, 2025, subject to weather conditions. Operating hours vary by day, providing flexibility for visitors to enjoy the attraction at their convenience.

Visitors to the parks are reminded that a valid park vehicle entry permit is required year-round. Saskatchewan Provincial Parks Annual Entry Permits are available for CA$45, offering unlimited access to winter activities and events until April 30. Daily permits can also be purchased for CA$11, catering to those planning shorter visits.

The permits are designed to streamline access to the parks, allowing guests to focus on enjoying the wide range of activities available. Sask Parks recommends purchasing permits online ahead of time to ensure a smooth entry process, particularly during peak times.
