The Government of Saskatchewan is investing CA$14 million in provincial park facility and infrastructure improvements in 2023-24.
This investment is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to make provincial parks more beautiful, welcoming, and accessible for everyone.
The projects that will be completed this fiscal year include a new day-use pavilion for Rowan’s Ravine, new campground service centers at Blackstrap and Makwa Lake Provincial Parks, construction of a new Visitor Reception Centre at Crooked Lake Provincial Park, the second phase of a campground development in Meadow Lake Provincial Park, and several other improvements.
The outdoor recreation industry in Saskatchewan is set to benefit significantly from these improvements.
The new facilities and infrastructure will enhance the visitor experience, thereby attracting more tourists and boosting the local economy.
The new day-use pavilion at Rowan’s Ravine, for instance, will provide a sheltered space for group or family gatherings, making the park more appealing for day visitors and overnight campers alike.
In addition to the new projects planned for this year, several major projects were completed over the past year.
These include a new campground service center at Duck Mountain Provincial Park, electrical service expansion to group campgrounds in Greenwater Lake and Moose Mountain Provincial Parks, boat launch upgrades at Douglas Provincial Park, new interpretive exhibits at the Buffalo Pound Provincial Park Visitor Centre, and major road upgrades at The Battlefords Provincial Park.
These improvements not only enhance the recreational facilities but also contribute to the conservation of the natural environment.
The upgrades to the water and wastewater systems at various parks, for example, will ensure the sustainable use of water resources. Similarly, the new interpretive exhibits at the Buffalo Pound Provincial Park Visitor Centre will enhance park interpretive programming, helping visitors understand and appreciate the park’s natural and cultural heritage.
With this year’s planned improvements, a total of CA$188 million will be invested in park facility expansion and upgrades since 2007.
This significant investment reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of outdoor recreation in Saskatchewan. It also underscores the importance of the outdoor recreation industry to the province’s economy and the well-being of its residents.
