Whispering Pines Campground Marks Over 50 Years of Growth on the Bruce Peninsula

Whispering Pines Family Campground in Hepworth, Ontario, is marking more than five decades of operation as a destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Situated at the base of the Bruce Peninsula, the campground spans 100 acres and has grown significantly since its early beginnings with only 15 sites in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Today, it offers more than 220 sites and a range of facilities designed to accommodate both short-term and seasonal visitors.

The property is owned and operated by the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound, which has played a central role in its development. The land was first leased in 1946 for tree planting, with purchases completed by 1972 to form the 100-acre site.

Over the years, the Kiwanis Club has overseen a series of upgrades, from the addition of two heated saltwater pools to the installation of rental trailers, cabins, and an enclosed pavilion with Wi-Fi.

Recreational amenities now include sports fields, pickleball and basketball courts, and playgrounds.

Located just a short drive from Sauble Beach, Southampton, and other popular Bruce Peninsula towns, Whispering Pines positions itself as a family-friendly option with access to both nature and community attractions.

Visitors have access to treated water, electrical hookups, laundry facilities, modern washrooms, and a dumping station.

The campground enforces quiet hours from 11:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. and has policies regarding alcohol, pets, and recreational equipment such as bicycles and golf carts.

For the outdoor hospitality industry, Whispering Pines serves as an example of how community organizations can sustain and grow a recreational facility over the long term.

Its evolution highlights the importance of reinvestment in amenities, balancing affordability with modern expectations, and maintaining policies that prioritize safety and comfort for guests.

As seasonal demand for camping continues to rise in Ontario, operators may look to models like Whispering Pines to evaluate how to expand capacity and diversify offerings without losing sight of community-focused values.

The Kiwanis Club’s stewardship of the campground demonstrates how local organizations can leverage tourism assets to provide both affordable recreation and sustained community benefit.

Their commitment has helped Whispering Pines maintain its reputation as a consistent destination for families seeking accessible outdoor experiences in the region.
