ORVDA Applauds Updated Licensing Regulations for Motorhome Operators in Ontario

Ontario drivers are no longer need a commercial license to operate motorhomes over 11,000 kilograms beginning July 1, following a regulatory update from the Ministry of Transportation. The change is intended to streamline licensing and eliminate a longstanding barrier for motorhome owners and dealers in the province.

The Ontario RV Dealers Association (ORVDA) announced the update, highlighting that the new regulation introduces an “RV-specific license.” The process will include an online learning module designed to ensure drivers are prepared to operate large motorhomes safely.

“These long-awaited changes come after sustained advocacy efforts by ORVDA’s Government Relations Committee, and they mark a significant step forward for both consumers and the RV industry,” ORVDA indicates in a Facebook post.

The updated requirements are now reflected in DriveTest records and other official communications channels across the province.

“This change aligns Ontario with national standards and eliminates one of the key regulatory barriers that have complicated motorhome ownership and sales in the province,” the association states.

Looking ahead, ORVDA will also hold its 2025 Annual General Meeting on October 29 at Deerhurst Resort in Muskoka. This one-day event will bring together industry leaders, members, and partners from across the province to discuss key updates, share insights, and strengthen collaboration within Ontario’s RV sector.

According to its website, ORVDA is a provincial, not-for-profit professional trade association representing more than 170 RV dealers and associate members.

The association advocates for the interests of its members—primarily small business owner-operators—who play a vital role in supporting and advancing RVing in Canada.

As a key voice in the RV industry, ORVDA is committed to fostering growth and public awareness of the RV and outdoor lifestyle. Through industry representation, education, and strategic partnerships, ORVDA works to protect and strengthen the recreation vehicle sector across Ontario.
