Grey Havens, a lakeside lodging property that incorporates themes inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings, continues to attract guests seeking quiet outdoor retreats while also expanding amenities meant to support nature-focused recreation.
Located on Townsend Lake, a kettle lake that feeds the Styx River, the privately run site blends a literary theme with on-site activities such as kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and waterfront access.
Operators encourage guests interested in reading and writing to make use of the small libraries placed in each accommodation. “Readers and writers especially like our lakefront property,” the host notes in describing the retreat-like setting.

The property also offers spaces for quiet work both indoors and outdoors, and provides opportunities for guests to purchase books by the host, a retired biologist and author.
Alongside its literary elements, Grey Havens markets water recreation and nature exploration. Guests may swim, fish, or launch their own kayaks or canoes from the dock.
The site offers an interpretive “Townsend Lake Cruise” aboard its electric vessel, Swizzle Styx, which explains the lake’s geology and ecology. Hiking opportunities are accessible in nearby County Forest lands and along the Bruce Trail.

The operation maintains a modest amenity mix, including free parking, Wi-Fi, an outdoor privy, and a shared 20-by-25-foot deck with a fire circle. Optional extras include locally sourced firewood, a butane cook stove, a gear wagon for transporting equipment, and a “Fire Workshop” for novice campers.
Grey Havens includes two primary lodging options. The Lakefront Log Cabin, a 16-by-16 log structure, accommodates up to three guests and has received upgrades since 2024, including seasonal heating and loft access.
A kitchenette, sleeping loft, private patio, and access to the shared waterfront deck are provided. The Elvish Suite, a second-floor unit attached to the host residence, offers private indoor facilities, a composting toilet, and a covered porch. It includes light-cooking capability with a butane stove, available as an add-on.

Both accommodations emphasize pack-in, pack-out practices, with partial cleaning fee refunds for guests who leave the space tidy. The host notes frequent curiosity about a “whale bench” featured in photos and invites visitors to ask about its story.
For outdoor hospitality operators, Grey Havens reflects ongoing demand for nature-integrated lodging with modest built infrastructure, thematic branding, and low-impact amenities.
The site illustrates how small-scale operators can combine environmental interpretation, niche themes, and value-added extras to create distinctive guest experiences while managing costs and encouraging responsible visitor behavior.
