Cameron’s Point Campground in South Glengarry marked its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades as a family-friendly destination along the St. Lawrence River.
A recent anniversary event featured a community breakfast with live folk fiddle and guitar music performed by the Three Bs, Denis Brisson, Donald Baker and Paul Bourgie, who said, “It’s the music that keeps them feeling young and alive.”
The campground is known for its sandy beach, pool, children’s play area, mini-putt and a converted barn that serves as a recreation center.
Two cottages, including the original family home, are available for rent.
According to an article published by Seaway News on June 17, Mayor Lachlan McDonald, a longtime visitor, joined the celebration and shared memories of the water slide he enjoyed as a child, expressing hopes that management might bring it back.
Roger Daigle, a mechanic by trade, purchased the farmland in the 1970s and moved his family of 10 into what is now called the Green Cottage. Together with his wife Georgette and their eight children, Daigle began transforming the property into a campground.
The Daigle children, Roger Jr., Phillipe, Jocelyne, Mark, Lise, Elaine, Alain and Marie-Anne, remember summers filled with hard work and family gatherings. The barn once housed arcade games and hosted community events.
Over the years, Cameron’s Point became a meeting place for extended family and friends. Relatives often camped there on weekends, creating a tradition of impromptu family reunions and community tournaments.
Fishing derbies, baseball games, horseshoe tournaments, pig roasts, corn roasts, Halloween events and New Year’s parties were part of the annual calendar, with many visitors forming lifelong friendships — and even marriages — at the site.
Today, Cameron’s Point is managed by the Weaving Basket Group, an Eastern Ontario property development and management firm.
Chantal Dupuis, recreational services manager, also oversees operations and credits dedicated volunteers for preserving the campground’s welcoming spirit.
Located in Summerstown, Ontario, on the scenic shores of the St. Lawrence River, Cameron’s Point offers visitors a tranquil escape to enjoy the region’s natural beauty.
Spanning 30 acres of open lots, the campground features a heated pool for relaxation and modern floating docks for boating adventures, providing families with everything they need for a summer retreat.
Just an hour from Ottawa and Montreal and only 20 minutes from the City of Cornwall, Cameron’s Point combines the comfort of convenient access with the charm of a riverside getaway.
