Multiple RV Manufacturers Face Significant Vehicle Recalls Due to Safety Concerns, NHTSA Reports

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced an extensive set of recalls involving multiple RV manufacturers.

This highlights the commitment of the NHTSA to maintain stringent safety standards and its continued efforts to ensure consumers are driving safe and reliable vehicles on the nation’s highways.

Airstream, Inc., a popular manufacturer of luxury RVs, has found itself at the center of two separate recalls.

One of the recalls pertains to 137 of its 2023 Bambi vehicles. An error in the vehicle’s freshwater tank capacity has led to an incorrect Cargo Carrying Capacity label, violating the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, which deals with “Tire Selection and Rims.” Airstream will address the issue by mailing corrected labels at no cost to the owners. These notifications are set to commence on August 20.

Simultaneously, another recall from Airstream, Inc. revolves around 105 of its 2023-2024 Interstate 24 and Interstate 19 motorhomes.

The issue lies in the main cable from the battery to the fuse panel being under-protected by a 200-amp fuse.

This could potentially lead to wiring overheating in the event of a short circuit. The company plans to replace the faulty 200-amp fuse with a safer 50-amp fuse, at no cost to consumers. The company is slated to begin notifying owners about the recall starting August 27.

Meanwhile, Daimler Vans USA, LLC, which oversees the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner brands, is recalling a significant number of vehicles — 20,500 to be exact.

The recall affects 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris and Sprinter, as well as 2021 Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The cause for concern is a potential fuel pump shutdown, leading to a loss of drive power. Daimler Vans will replace the fuel pump free of charge, with owner notification letters set to be mailed starting July 28.

Thor Motor Coach is also caught in the recall wave, with 213 of its 2022-2024 Tranquility and 2022-2023 Sanctuary motorhomes identified for potential risk. These models come with R-bike rack arms that may fracture and detach.

The company will replace the faulty components without any charge. The communication to the owners about this recall is scheduled to start on August 26.

Lastly, Grand Design RV, LLC is issuing a recall for specific 2023 Momentum and Reflection travel trailers, which come equipped with 5200 and 6000 CURT RV axles.

The axles on these trailers may possess a loosely fitted grease fitting that can separate and possibly result in wheel detachment, posing a serious safety hazard.

The company will arrange for the necessary inspections, repairs, or replacements, all at no cost to owners. Grand Design expects to start mailing owner notification letters on July 26.

These recent recalls, adhering to NHTSA’s strict protocols, underscore the critical role of consumer safety in vehicle manufacturing.

After being informed by the NHTSA, manufacturers are expected to notify their dealer partners about the recalls, providing them with detailed information about the affected vehicles and the appropriate remedies.

Despite the inconveniences caused, these recalls serve to protect consumers from potential safety hazards and contribute to the ongoing efforts to maintain the highest standards on the road.
