The Flow Wilderness Retreat Combines Kayaking Adventures with Upscale Hospitality

The Flow Wilderness Retreat, located on Maurelle Island in British Columbia’s Discovery Islands, has developed a model blending adventure tourism with upscale hospitality.

Established by Brody and Cristina Fox, the retreat evolved from years of experience in sea kayaking and eco-tourism, with a focus on combining guided kayaking expeditions with comfortable accommodations and amenities.

The retreat offers the Flow Tour, a multi-day kayaking experience that includes lodge-style accommodation, gourmet meals, kayaking instruction, and professional guides. Equipment is provided, and the program emphasizes a seamless guest experience that pairs outdoor adventure with comfort.

According to the operators, the intention behind The Flow was “to connect and recharge people, while making the adventure as effortless and comfortable as possible.”

Guests participate in daily paddling excursions across the waters of the Surge Narrows Marine Park, with evenings spent at the retreat’s base camp. Facilities include private cabins, a main lodge, a dining patio, and a freshwater cedar hot tub.

Brody, a local of Maurelle Island, and Cristina, who has lived in the Discovery Islands since 1995, have been operating the retreat for over a decade. Both began their careers as kayak guides, gaining international experience in destinations including New Zealand before establishing their own tourism venture in Canada.

For outdoor hospitality professionals, The Flow’s approach highlights the growing demand for hybrid experiences that combine eco-tourism with higher-end amenities.

While traditional wilderness retreats often focus on rustic simplicity, The Flow demonstrates that there is a viable market segment for adventure travelers seeking comfort alongside activity. This reflects a broader industry trend toward luxury adventure tourism, where operators balance authentic natural settings with spa-style services, curated dining, and personalized hosting.

The retreat’s development also underscores the importance of gradual investment and refinement.

Over a ten-year period, Brody and Cristina expanded their base camp, fine-tuning guest services and facilities to align with visitor expectations.

For park and campground operators, this model illustrates how incremental upgrades—such as improved dining options, enhanced lodging, and wellness amenities—can elevate visitor experience and attract new demographics.

With its combination of guided kayaking and hospitality infrastructure, The Flow Wilderness Retreat is positioned within a niche that continues to grow as travelers look for experiences that connect them to the outdoors without sacrificing comfort.
