Reo Rafting and Glamping Resort Reopens After Kookipi Creek Wildfire Recovery

In British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, Reo Rafting, Glamping and Yoga Resort in Boston Bar reopened its doors for its 42nd season, marking a comeback after the devastating Kookipi Creek wildfire in July 2023. The wildfire destroyed several buildings, including the new Healing Center, staff lodging, and facilities.

The resort’s journey began in the early 1980s when Bryan Fogelman, captivated by the beauty of the Nahatlatch River, purchased a private section of the canyon and started constructing what would become a riverfront destination. In 1993, Karen Pennell visited as a guest, leading to her marriage to Fogelman two years later on the banks of the river.

Despite the challenges in recovering from the fire, the resort found hope through community support. According to an article published by Nuvo on July 29, The First Nations Guardians played a role in the initial emergency response and recovery efforts. Additionally, former guests sent donations to support the rebuilding efforts.

The rebuilding process has resulted in a rejuvenated resort.  Guests can enjoy glamping-style tents, each offering private riverside decks constructed from hand-peeled logs. The resort has also added three yoga decks catering to various skill levels and styles, complementing the resort with opportunities for relaxation and mindfulness.

For adventure seekers, Reo Resort continues to offer its signature whitewater rafting experiences on the Nahatlatch River, known for its 24 adrenaline-pumping rapids and status as Canada’s river with continuous whitewater. The resort is open through September 15.

“We use small paddle rafts with 4-9 paddlers and one professional guide. No noisy motors! With an industry-leading safety record for over 38 years of operation on Canada’s best rivers, REO guarantees a safe, intimate, and memorable vacation,” the resort stated on its website.

Another aspect of the resort is sustainability. Reo Rafting, Glamping and Yoga Resort showcases its commitment to environmental stewardship, featuring solar power systems and fresh water sourced from a natural spring flowing through the property.

The reopening of Reo Resort is also a significant boost for the local economy. Family-run resorts like Reo are crucial in attracting international visitors and supporting local communities within British Columbia’s tourism industry.
