The Lake Park Society (LPS) is celebrating a decade of managing Cumberland Lake Park & Campground under an agreement with the Village of Cumberland. Over the past 10 years, the society has transformed the municipal park into a center for inclusive recreation, outdoor education, and community connection.
In 2024, the park maintained strong visitation levels, with August reaching a peak occupancy rate of 97%. This year also saw the introduction of new sleeping barrel accommodations, which provided visitors with a glamping experience. The accommodations received positive reviews and strong bookings, further enhancing the park’s appeal.
Over CA$50,000 in revenue share, primarily generated from visitor spending, was transferred to the Village of Cumberland.
Beyond its camping offerings, LPS provided 800 hours of programming to more than 1,700 participants. These activities ranged from school field trips and youth summer camps to watershed canoe tours and community events, such as movie nights and live music performances.
The park also faced challenges during the busy summer months due to high visitation levels, particularly in day-use and boat launch areas. In response, the Village of Cumberland and the society implemented measures to improve visitor experiences and manage congestion.
Real-time parking lot webcams were introduced, enabling users to check conditions before arriving. Additionally, roving foot safety patrols were deployed to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all guests.
“As we reflect on a decade of growth, LPS remains steadfast in its mission to create wonder and connection through outdoor experiences. The society is deeply grateful for the support of the Village of Cumberland and the broader community in cultivating a thriving, inclusive hub for outdoor education and recreation at Cumberland Lake Park,” a press release indicated.
