Metro Vancouver has opened public consultation on a proposed expansion of the campground at Derby Reach Regional Park in Langley (British Columbia).
The regional district has already launched a public consultation process as it moves forward with a proposal to add 30 new campsites to the park.
“Planning is underway for an expansion to the existing campground. We are in the planning phase of the project. The proposed site is located within the Agricultural Land Reserve. Regional Parks submitted a non-farm use application to the Agricultural Land Commission and in January 2025, the non-farm use was approved,” the announcement indicates.
According to an article published by Aldergrove Star, the additional sites would be located east of the existing Edgewater Bar Campground, the park’s only current camping area.
The expansion is intended to address rising demand for camping space across the region. Derby Reach, a popular destination along the Fraser River, often sees its existing sites fully booked during peak season.
The park spans a large stretch of land along the river, extending as far west as 208 Street and southeast to 102 Avenue and MacKinnon Crescent.
It features walking trails, picnic areas, and historic sites, but only one campground, located at 21801 Allard Crescent.
The project aims to balance recreational needs with environmental considerations. The new sites are being planned “to reduce the impacts of seasonal flooding and avoid disturbing existing natural areas,” the announcement said.
The planned expansion includes more than just campsites. Project details show an access road, picnic shelter, and additional amenities will be added to support the new facilities.
Community engagement is a central part of the process. Metro Parks has invited the public to share their views on the project through an online survey.
The survey, which includes a project map and additional background, is available on the Metro Vancouver Parks website. Responses will be accepted until Sept. 26.
