Central Saanich Beach Welcomes Extended Camping Season

Central Saanich Beach, a  camping destination in British Columbia, Canada is undergoing a transformation. The Capital Regional District (CRD) has embarked on a pilot project to enrich the camping experience. This initiative will grant campers an extra 35 days, extending the camping season all the way to October 9.

Historically, the campground has been operational from the Victoria Day long weekend in May, culminating on the Labor Day weekend in September.

The decision to extend the season came after the CRD’s parks committee approved it on June 28, followed by the CRD board’s approval on July 12.

This decision was made in collaboration with the District of Central Saanich. Earlier in the year, the CRD had applied for a temporary use permit renewal with Central Saanich, aiming to operate the campground for an additional three years.

This permit is crucial to ensure that the campground and other areas of the park align with Central Saanich bylaws.

The permit will remain effective until the CRD finalizes the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw amendment, which will solidify the campground’s designation.

Island View Beach Regional Park Campground boasts a variety of camping options. It offers 18 beach-front RV sites, five treed tent trailer sites, and 24 treed tent sites.

All these sites are available only through reservations, with no options for first-come, first-served bookings. However, amenities like hydro, dumping stations, and showers are not provided.

The idea to extend the camping season emerged during the application review process. Central Saanich expressed interest in a trial extension of the camping season at Island View, leading to the inception of the pilot project. As a result, the campground will remain open until the Thanksgiving long weekend this year.

The CRD is committed to evaluating the success of this pilot project. A thorough review will be conducted, and findings will be presented to the parks committee and the CRD board in early 2024.

In the broader context of camping trends, there’s a noticeable shift towards eco-friendly practices, digital detox, and adventure camping.

Campgrounds like Island View are adapting to these trends, ensuring they offer a modern and fulfilling experience to campers.

The extended camping season at Central Saanich Beach is a testament to the evolving needs of campers and the proactive approach of the CRD. It promises a richer camping experience, blending tradition with modern trends.
