Mountain View County Council (Alberta, Canada) has requested that the administration provide information on the taxation of recreational vehicles (RVs) in the municipality.
Mike Krieger, manager of assessment services, presented the 2023 market assessment report at a recent council meeting, held both in person and online.
Coun. Peggy Johnson inquired about the tax category for RVs, and Krieger confirmed that they fall under the residential property class.
Johnson further asked whether RVs are taxed based on market value, to which Krieger replied, “They would be, yes.” When questioned about the tax revenue generated by RVs in Mountain View County, Krieger admitted that he would need to compile this information, as he didn’t have it readily available.
Johnson expressed concerns about the winter storage of large numbers of RVs and the aging of these vehicles, which could potentially generate less tax revenue.
She requested that the administration provide information on the tax revenue for RVs in Mountain View County for the year 2022, as well as trends in this tax number over the last four years.
Krieger explained that there are instances where multiple RVs are assessed to one roll number, making the total assessment for that type of property more valuable than the number of RVs.
Reeve Angela Aalbers asked Johnson about the purpose of the requested information, to which Johnson replied that her observation is that RVs used for winter storage are depreciating assets that generate less tax revenue as they age. The council carried a motion instructing the administration to bring back the information on RV taxation.
During his presentation, Krieger went over property assessment statistics in the county, including residential and non-residential categories.
He emphasized the importance of understanding trends for the county’s financial strength, as the majority of revenue comes from property owners. In 2022, total assessment values increased in all five property classes: residential, non-residential, machinery and equipment, farmland, and linear.

As the RV industry continues to grow, with more people embracing the outdoor lifestyle and seeking alternative vacation options, understanding the tax implications and revenue generated from RVs becomes increasingly important for municipalities like Mountain View County.
The taxation of RVs not only affects local government revenue but also has an impact on the overall economic landscape of the area.
By analyzing the trends in RV taxation and the number of RVs being taxed, local governments can make informed decisions regarding infrastructure, services, and future planning to better accommodate the needs of RV owners and the community as a whole.
Gaining insights into the RV market can also help municipalities identify potential opportunities for growth and development, ensuring that they remain competitive in the ever-evolving outdoor hospitality industry.
