Deep Creek Camping and Events Highlights Blended Model of Hospitality and Recreation

Deep Creek Camping and Events in Sangudo, Alberta, has been welcoming visitors since 2018, offering a mix of campsites, accommodations, and community-focused activities along the Pembina River.

The family-owned business is operated by two generations of the Shura family, who describe their goal as creating a space for families to gather and connect with nature.

Ray and Jacque Shura, along with their son Corrie and daughter-in-law Tara, manage the campground, which has grown to employ up to 15 seasonal staff.

The campground offers a range of options for visitors, including unserviced tent and pop-up sites starting at $28 per night, serviced sites starting at $46 per night, and rental accommodations beginning at $99 per night.

Lodging includes bunkie cabins, an A-frame cabin, and a fifth-wheel trailer, designed for guests seeking a camping experience without the need for personal equipment.

Amenities at Deep Creek include a nine-hole mini golf course built with support from local sponsors, a general store offering supplies and firewood, bike and game rentals, and access to the Pembina River for floating, fishing, and other water-based activities.

Seasonal events are also a key part of the campground’s offering, with organizers emphasizing community gatherings that bring together both campers and local residents.

Facilities such as shower houses, porta-potties, and sani-dump services are available, with some provided in partnership with Riverside Campground nearby.

Firewood delivery and more than 30 flavors of Foothills Creamery ice cream are also available onsite, underscoring the campground’s focus on convenience for visitors.

For campground operators and business owners in the outdoor hospitality industry, Deep Creek provides an example of a diversified revenue model that extends beyond traditional site rentals.

By combining camping, accommodations, activities, events, and retail offerings, the Shura family has positioned their property as both a local community hub and a regional tourism destination.

Such a model highlights opportunities for operators looking to increase per-guest revenue while also fostering community connections.
