Another notable feature is the “Camping This Weekend” option, tailored for last-minute planners. This tool displays available campsites for the upcoming weekend, offering a solution for those seeking spontaneous outdoor adventures. However, Dixon pointed out one shortfall of the new system: the inability to purchase a Kananaskis Conservation Pass during the campsite booking process.
The launch of the new website comes with updated reservation rules. Campers can now book sites 90 days in advance for individual and backcountry camping, and 180 days in advance for group and comfort camping. The changes also include a reduction in the maximum consecutive nights from 14 to 10, aiming to prevent overbooking during peak seasons.
To further address this issue, Alberta Parks has implemented a new policy restricting changes to arrival or departure dates within 31 days of booking, for those made 90 days in advance. While cancellations are permitted at any time, reservations cannot be altered until they fall within the 90-day booking window.
The updated booking system is scheduled to go live at 9 a.m. on Feb. 20, coinciding with the first opportunity for campers to reserve spots for the May long weekend. This strategic timing is expected to accommodate the anticipated demand for one of the busiest camping periods of the year.
