Grand Teton National Park Opens Backcountry Camping Reservations

In a press release, the National Park Service announced the opening of backcountry camping reservations for Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming).

“Backcountry camping permits will be available online beginning Tuesday, January 10 at 8 a.m. (MST) for summer 2023 in Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway,” the release indicated.

Surrounded by wildlife, picturesque lakes, and alpine terrain, Grand Teton National Park, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts offering over 200 miles of trails to explore.

The NPS urged visitors to reserve their special night under the stars early as reservations are expected to fill quickly.

Exploring the ‘Mountains of the Imagination’

According to the NPS, backcountry camping at Grand Teton includes sites that are not accessible by vehicle, and while it is an incredible way to experience the park, it does require careful planning and obtaining a permit.

Backcountry camping permits are available through Recreation.gov in advance, or on a first-come, first-served basis the day before your trip at park backcountry offices such as the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose, Colter Bay Visitor Center, and Jenny Lake Ranger Station.

If you’re interested in camping at a site that is accessible by vehicle, Grand Teton offers frontcountry camping options. These campsites feature standard amenities like restrooms, potable water, fire grates, picnic tables, and bear boxes. All frontcountry camping is by reservation only and can be booked up to six months in advance.

The park noted that sleeping overnight in vehicles or car camping is not allowed in park pullouts, parking areas, picnic areas, or any place other than a designated campground. Overnight parking at trailheads is only permitted with a backcountry permit.

Grand Teton features a variety of campgrounds, including Gros Ventre Campground, Jenny Lake Campground, Signal Mountain Campground, Colter Bay Campground, Colter Bay RV Park, Colter Bay Tent Village, Lizard Creek Campground, and Headwaters Campground.
